Around 93% of job candidates feel anxious about their job interviews.
Now, a remote interview can bring with it a whole new set of worries altogether. Perhaps, it’s your first online job interview and maybe you’re not sure what to expect.
If it’s apprehension, anxiousness or stress that’s brought you here, know that you are not alone. It is something most job candidates go through on the days preceding an interview.
The good news is, we’ve outlined a few tips to help you prepare for and ace that job interview the way you were meant to!
Work On How You Present Yourself
A virtual interview shouldn’t encourage a lack of professionalism. Instead, use this opportunity to take control of your aesthetic. Make an effort to look the part for your interview. Do some research about the company and find out what kind of dress code and work environment they encourage.
Another part of how you present yourself in a remote interview is your surroundings. Find a place that is well lit, tidy, quiet and has the lowest likelihood of unexpected disturbances.
Master the Platform
Next, you want to be sure to familiarise yourself with the video platform of choice. If you’re unfamiliar with the platform, schedule a meeting with a friend and take some time to figure out how it works.
You can also use this as an opportunity to test your audio and visual quality.
Make notes
Do you have questions you’d like to ask your interviewer? Is there something about you that would increase your chances of getting the job?
Jot down what you’d like to talk about on a notepad or a piece of paper and keep it around you during the interview. That way, if you’re ever stuck on what to say next, you’ll always have those points as a reference.
Knowing that you have something to fall back on will go a long way in helping you feel at ease during your professional interview.
Arrive Early
Getting ready for the interview earlier than it actually is can help you get comfortable with yourself and your surroundings. Allow yourself a window of ten or fifteen minutes to do one quick test of your internet connection, your audio and your general appearance.
Create a Back-Up Plan
While there’s no need to worry yourself over all the possible things that could go wrong, taking a few preparatory measures can help you feel at ease. For example, if you have access to a backup internet connection — use it. If you’re unsure about the availability of your chosen interview space, keep an alternative ready.
Getting the Most Out of Your Remote Interview
You’ve made your notes, you’ve studied the platform and you’ve done your research. Now take a deep breath, and ace that remote interview!
